Why it is Important to be Research Intensive in Retirement Plan Management

Last Updated: April 11, 2013

A retirement plan is intricate; every decision you make pertaining to its operation requires careful consideration. Yet, many advisers base their recommendations on purely quantitative information, which may leave you unable to see the whole picture. Pension Consultants does things differently. The retirement plan industry is riddled with miscommunications and missed expectations between plan sponsors and record keepers. As a research-driven firm, we emphasize prudent process to our clients, establish realistic expectations and monitor vendors to see whether or not they adhere to the plan we outline.
We hold ourselves to a different standard than others in our industry. We base our recommendations on methodical independent research. As a company, our goal is to do things correctly and carefully, regardless of how long it takes because you need clear answers when it comes to your employer-sponsored retirement plan. To our peers, what we do is a lot of work. To us, it’s just the way things should be done. The issue is not that traditional approaches will always lead you down the wrong path; it’s that it will lead you down the wrong path more times than necessary. We want to be certain that the research we offer has the depth and substance to allow you to make informed decisions that may lead to better outcomes. We believe doing the right thing means not cutting corners, which leads to you getting more complete advice to protect you and your retirement plan. You will find this academic method apparent in all that we undertake, including: investment research, evaluating ERISA compliance for our plan sponsor clients, participant education and advice and vendor search and monitoring. You can learn more about the specific ways in which we are research-focused in each department here. PCI’s archived blog entries are dated, the rules and statutes referenced may have changed.
